FOX PULLS 'DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN'

Whoops.

This picture is a screen capture from NFL highlights of the game between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints on Sunday (Saints win! 22-16!). There, in the lower left, you'll see an advert for Game 1 of the World Series, between the Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Indians.

Maybe the Fox Network should have waited a little bit, since it broadcast Game 7 of the ALCS between the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. The Sox pummeled the Tribe Sunday night 11-2.

Sorry, Tony Messenger. I'm hoping the Sox pull another Cardinal-style sweep. But don't tell Kris, official sister of the Mailbox and crazy-psycho Sox fan. I can't have her know I'm rootin' for her team.

MOCKERY OF TYPOS SURGES

If there's any curse about being a journalist, especially one who has spent time as a copy editor, it's how typos, bad spellings, awful grammar and misused punctuation stand out like an awkward interview. If there is any joy, it's being with a woman who sees the same typos and finds them just as repugnant. True story: We almost took back fireworks we purchased because on the way out we spotted the stand's sign that said, "SATURN MISILES."

The Grammarphile, official friend of the Mailbox, has had a long, illustrious, 10-month career of finding typos and making fun of them. She makes reference to a cute and smart Grammar Stud, so I hope she's also in loves with someone who takes the same sick joy in being repulsed by lexicographical laziness. But what amazes me is the amount of links she has on her blog to other blogs dedicated to picking out mistakes. There's a lot of them. You should browse, read and gag along with the rest of us.

OH, MY NOLA...

I'm remembering what it's like to be a Saints fan. Three losses, no wins? Ouch. That hasn't happened since Ditka.

A fellow fanatic, only inclined toward the Bears of the Windy City, warned me that if Reggie Bush or Drew Brees went down, season over. While that's true, it wasn't the biggest cause for alarm -- the Saints secondary was. Our defense makes good quarterbacks better and Peyton Manning look legendary. Vince Young, after the game where the Titans beat the Saints 31-14, said he wanted to be known as a passing QB. Sorry, VY. Not gonna happen until you throw TDs against legit Ds.

As for the Saints, I see the biggest problem as the O-line. The five Js were pushing Ds around last year, letting Brees take his time and do what he does best. In three games, Brees has thrown 7 picks -- all of them under pressure.

I'll always love the Saints. It's just hard sometimes.

LIPS OF AN ANGEL, WORDS OF A PLAYA

The Mailbox is always amazed at what people will buy. Apparently, enough of y'all are buying "Lips of an Angel" in both rock and country flavors. It needs to stop.

I about drove into a ditch when I heard a country singer singing, "My girl's in the next room, sometimes I wish she was you." Jack Ingram had to go and remake a song that was just released last year by Oklahoma City band Hinder.

"Lips of an Angel" -- the Mailbox will say it -- is the worst song ever. The lyrics are cheesy, bombastic and immature. And, though the band denies the song is about cheating, the song sure sounds like it's about cheating.

The Mailbox read the lyrics to the song and wonders if girls really buy into this crap. "I never wanna say goodbye / But girl you make it hard to be faithful / With the lips of an angel." The song made it to No. 1 in the Top 40, meaning that a whole bunch of people bought it and bought into it. TLP, official girlfriend of the Mailbox, says it best: "Any woman who would find that song romantic is an insult to the species."
